Short Story: The Blue Planet

Image
Paul was walking up and down the corridors of his space station. He was certain he had forgotten something, but he couldn’t remember what.             “Are you sure I remembered everything?” He asked his assistant a short woman with thick glasses. She didn’t really need the glasses. She only wore them because she thought they made her look more intellectual. “Yes, I am positive.” She said struggling to keep up with him. “Everything is in place. You’ve got more than enough oxygen, the engine is filled to the brim and the team has made sure that the ship is flight-worthy about ten times now. No, there can’t be anything that you could have forgotten.” Paul sighed             “How long before the tourists arrive,” he said His assistant checked her watch             “ In about five minutes.” “Well, then we’ll j...

Poem: Inches from salvation

Image
Inches from salvation   his breath was heavy and his legs were leaden but still he carried on he was only half a mile from the border with the enemy following his trail a trail of red running through the icy forest covered in a blanket of white from behind he heard harsh voices of men led by the sound of barking hounds his scent heavy in their nostrils the only thing between him the border and freedom he limped into a clearing where his eyes were met by a frozen lake the border his freedom he was a mere fifty feet from his freedom his heart pounded with fear and with joy only fifty feet until his salvation forty five feet later his pursuers had found the end of the trail he felt the metal of the bullet biting into his back sending him tumbling down his hot blood mingling with the icy snow there he laid still a red river running from where the bullet had entered his body he stretched his hand out and continued crawling for...

Poem: My Hovel

Image
My Hovel   In my putrid hovel the fire burns low For sustenance I have a pressing need This wrenched meat has died days long gone But I am starving, therefore I must feed   This bloody war has drawn on far too long This horrid thing has robbed me of everything Where are my sons, so youthful and so strong They, struck down by a wretched ox hide sling   Armed with copper spears we marched off to war I had never made it to the battle An illness struck me, I could fight no more Left behind, my people slaughtered like cattle   All because they don’t worship the same gods as us Now who cared, the gods have forsaken us copyright reserved  © Baloyi 2024

Manliness in Homer's Odyssey

Image
Odysseus is definitely presented as an idealized image of Greek masculinity. In ancient Greek thinking a man should be measured by his Physical and mental resilience, his courage, his physical strength, how brave he is, how attractive women find him, his skills as a warrior, his skills as a leader, and his intelligence. I believe Homer’s Odysseus excels in all these areas. I will now explain why I believe this to be the case. I will do so by looking at a few extracts within the Odyssey and comparing Odysseus with other characters within this epic.   There are few places in the Odyssey where Odysseus’s physical strength is illustrated in book 8, The book about the Phaeacian games. In this book we can clearly see Odysseus outdoing the Phaeacian athletes by far: White this he leapt to his feet and, not even troubling to remove his cloak, picked up the      biggest discus of all, a huge weight, more massive by far than the Phaeacians normally      ...

The Guest Host Relationship in Homer's Odyssey

Image
This essay is about Xenia (guest host relationship) in The Odyssey. To make this essay more understandable it should be explained what Xenia is and what it meant to the ancient Greeks. The roads in ancient Greece were treacherous. One could be best by bandits or wild animals at any point of one’s journey. Traveling by sea was even more dangerous. It therefore was more than mere bad manners for a host not to treat his guest properly. It was customary for a host to offer his guest food and drink, a bath, clean clothes, and bedding for at least one night (sometimes a host would also give his guest gifts on his departure). Only thereafter can the host ask his guest who he is and where he is from. Zeus was considered as being the protector of guests and it was believed that anyone who broke the sacred contract of Xenia was insulting Zeus and that there was sure to be terrible consciousness for them, because of their actions. In this essay, I will explore some of the hosts in the Odyssey ...

The “Heart of Darkness” in “Apocalypse Now”

Image
Insanity: this is the one word I would use to describe either  Heart of Darkness  by Josef Conrad or the film  Apocalypse Now . There is a clear link between both works and it is quite clear that  Apocalypse Now  is based on  Heart of Darkness . Although both works are set in different time and a different place, they explore similar concepts. Both works explore the innermost darkness and the madness of humanity. Both the book and the film are also highly focused round the theme of the invasion and suppression of foreign people. In this essay I would look at the similarities and differences between the book and the film. I would particularly look at how both works depict madness within society.  Apocalypse Now  is a much more recent work than  Heart of Darkness  and yet it used  Heart of Darkness  as its basis. By comparing the similarities, I can see just how effectively  Heart of Darkness  fits into a much more rece...
