What are Articles?

There are only three articles in the English language: a, an ,the 

Because of this, they are some of the easiest parts of speech to recognize. Articles are used to indicate what object is referred to.


Definite Articles.

There is only one definite article in the English language: the

Definite articles are used to indicate specific objects.


Example: "Grammaticus wants to eat the apple."

In this example, the word the is used to indicate a specific apple. In this case, Grammaticus wants to eat one apple in particular.


Indefinite Articles.

There are two indefinite articles in the English language: a, an

Indefinite articles are used to indicate non-specific objects.


Example: "Grammaticus wants to eat an apple."

In this example the word an is used to indicate that the apples in general are referred to, instead of one specific apple. In this case, Grammaticus wants to eat an apple, but he doesn't have a particular apple in mind.
