The Hobbit: Still a Joy too Read
The Hobbit is a book written by the esteemed author J.R.R. Tolkien. The Hobbit story precedes the events of the more famous book series The Lord of The Rings.
Even though The Hobbit is set in the same
world as The Lord of The Rings the two books have a very
different tone. The Lord of The Rings has a much more serious tone
with the plot mainly revolves around the conflict between good and evil. The
Hobbit on the other hand is a classic adventure story with a much more
light-hearted tone than The Lord of the Rings.
The plot of The Hobbit mainly revolves
around a series of often dangerous things that happen to the
protagonist Bilbo Baggins and his thirteen dwarf companions. The story follows
their journey to a now-destroyed dwarven city with the ultimate goal of looting
the hoard of the dragon that now resides there.
The story manages to draw the reader in. There is always a
new interesting and memorable situation that Billbo must contend with. I was
quite simply unable to put the book down. I always needed to see how Bilbo
would manage to get out of yet another sticky situation. The Hobbit has a
charming writing style that will always leave you wanting more.
Engaging characters is arguably one of the most important,
if not the most important parts of a book’s appeal. Tolkien has created an
interesting and colorful set of characters. The book has everything from a
mysterious wizard to a man who could turn into a bear to a dwarf king without a
kingdom.
The wizard Gandalf was a particular favorite of mine,
simply because of his mysterious nature. The reader is never quite sure of who
is nor what his motives are.
The Hobbit is
an absolute joy to read and is a must-read for anyone who loves fantasy or
adventure novels. I would easily consider The Hobbit as the
best fantasy book I have ever read.
